The Level Crossing Working Group (LCWG) is working on two initiatives to support the Level Crossing Strategy Council in improving level crossing safety.

Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model (ALCAM) Database

The first initiative is the continued development of the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model (ALCAM) Database. This database aims to assist Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) in prioritising works at level crossings by serving as an assessment tool that can identify risk. To support the development of the ALCAM Database, TfNSW requires local AADT data as a critical input and has requested that Councils share any relevant information.

If your Council has a public level crossing, you can contribute by sharing new and existing data to hai.guo@transport.nsw.gov.au.

Potential Level Crossing Closures

The second initiative focuses on understanding community perspectives around level crossing closures, as these often face public opposition. Level crossing closures can impact adjacent landowners, emergency services, road authorities, rail users, and the community. Therefore, gaining local support and addressing community concerns is an important part of the process. TfNSW would like to consult with Councils where level crossings may be considered for closure, to ensure community perspectives are factored in alongside considerations such as practicality, cost effectiveness, benefits, and alternative routes. Any submissions or applications for level crossing closures will be reviewed by TfNSW.
